Confessions of An Abandoned Amusement Park

Every now and then I just need a non furniture related blog! My friend Darcie and I got to know each other last March when we were paired up as roommates on a two-week WWII Battlefield tour of Europe we went on with the local high school.  We traipsed through England, France, Belgium, Germany and Poland seeing Omaha and Utah beaches, the Ardennes Forest (the sight of The Battle of the Bulge) and touring Auschwitz and Birkenau.  I wish every one could tour the concentration camps.  There is a history lesson there that should never be forgotten.  We even left the tour group and were able to navigate our way via public transportation to the Harley dealership in the very much non-English speaking city of Warsaw, Poland.  It was an amazing adventure!

Recently, she and I took our girls and headed down to Arkansas to tour an abandoned amusement park. Dogpatch USA was opened in 1968 and based on Al Capp’s popular comic strip Li’l Abner, which was set in the fictional town of Dogpatch. The park had a roller coaster, a huge water slide, and all kinds of shops.

Imagine all the memories this holds for families!  It looks decidedly different now–a little cool and spooky!

Every abandoned building and rail track holds countless family memories.

We took fun family pics and pics of all the girls.  We climbed the hills and old tracks and had a fabulous day!

Everywhere we turned I could imagine the countless families that visited and the fun they had!

If you ever get the chance to go to an abandoned amusement park, I highly recommend it!  Now to find our next adventure!

The next blog, a beautiful stripped buffet.
